The most important “tool” you’ll ever have is your knowledge!
(Pic to right does not show all guitar repair tools needed)
For all the tools you need for most jobs, at today’s prices (March 2026), the total around $1,000, including a solid, dependable workbench.
During our hands-on classes, you’ll get to use these tools and you’ll learn why we often recommend specific brands while in other cases, generic tools work fine.
You’ll also learn how to make a tool that isn’t available anywhere, that will save many hours on fretwork.
A common misconception is that starting a guitar repair business requires thousands of dollars in equipment.
In reality, a very basic professional setup toolkit can often be assembled for $300–$800, depending on quality, brand and the type of jobs you intend to take.
Many technicians start small and gradually add tools as their repair skills expand.
The most important investment is not tools — it is learning the correct procedures and measurement methods that will let you compete with other professional repair shops.
Specialized Guitar Repair Tools
More advanced repairs require additional specialized tools.
Examples include:
• fret leveling beams
• fret crowning files
• nut files
• fret pullers
• soldering equipment
• clamp sets
• cordless drill
These tools allow technicians to perform:
-
fretwork
-
nut replacement
-
electronics repair
-
structural repairs
Tools vs Skill
Tools do not make someone a guitar technician.
Two people with the same tools can produce completely different results depending on their training and understanding of instrument setup.
Without the proper knowledge, even expensive tools will not produce professional results.
