Learn Fretwork

Stop Spending Your Days Sanding Frets

Professional fretwork starts with recognizing what the guitar needs.

Are you looking for fret wear during your setups? Did you know that most fretwear can be removed, extending the life of the frets and saving customers from expensive Level & Crown jobs or even Refrets?  Deep grooves will require a level and crown.  Frets with too little height remaining will require a refret, but the vast majority can have their lives greatly extended.

After leveling and crowning, the frets still carry marks from the crowning file. Removing those marks by hand is slow work.  Consider a guitar with 21 or more frets. Each fret has two sides requiring attention. You work through progressively finer sandpaper: #400, #600, #800, #1000, #1200, #1600, #2000, and #2500. That sanding stage alone can take well over an hour.

GTA grads qualify for MasterPro Guitar Setup certification, and with the custom Fret Renewal Tool, that comes with your MasterPro toolkit, the same process takes about two minutes. Final polishing follows.

The FRT is also useful for removing early fret wear before small grooves become a bigger problem. Catch that wear soon enough, remove the grooves, and polish the frets—they look like new.

At GTA, you learn the fundamentals behind the work, how to choose the appropriate repair, and how to use practical tools that save time.

Knowing what to do is essential. Learning an efficient way to do it makes that knowledge more valuable at the workbench.  Time is Money!
