There’s a big difference between learning guitar repair in a classroom and learning it inside a busy professional repair shop.

Guitar Tech Academy’s on-site program is held at Hank’s Guitar Shop in Clearwater, Florida, a 5-star guitar shop where four full-time guitar techs perform thousands of setups and repairs each year.

That matters.

Our students aren’t learning repair as an abstract subject. They’re learning in the same environment where real customers bring in real guitars with real problems every day.

Learn From Techs Who Do This for a Living

At Guitar Tech Academy, your instructors aren’t simply teaching from a textbook or demonstrating techniques they learned years ago.

They are working guitar technicians.

Every week they diagnose and repair instruments with problems ranging from routine setup issues to fretwork, nut problems, electronics failures, tuning instability, buzzing and playability problems that other shops have been unable to solve.

In fact, other guitar shops — including Guitar Center locations — have referred repair customers to Hank’s Guitar Shop when they need work they cannot handle themselves.

That experience becomes part of your education.

You aren’t just learning how a repair should work. You’re learning what actually happens when hundreds of different guitars, players and problems come through the door.

Real Guitars Don’t Always Follow the Textbook

Half of the 1,000 sq ft workshop

A guitar may come in with proper relief, correct action, properly cut nut slots and level frets — and still buzz.

Another guitar may have symptoms that point toward one problem but are actually being caused by something completely different.

That’s where professional diagnosis becomes important.

Anyone can memorize a list of specifications. A professional guitar tech needs to understand why a guitar behaves the way it does, how the different parts of the instrument interact and how to determine the actual cause of a problem before making adjustments.

That diagnostic thinking is a major part of GTA training.

Learn an Efficient Professional Workflow

Repair quality matters, but so does efficiency.

A professional tech cannot spend half a day performing a routine setup and expect to operate a profitable shop.

At GTA, students learn the processes, measurement techniques, tools and sequence of operations used every day at Hank’s Guitar Shop.

That means learning not only how to get the right result, but how to achieve it consistently and efficiently.

You’ll learn how to evaluate an instrument, measure it accurately, determine what work it actually needs, perform that work in a logical sequence and verify the result before the guitar goes back to the customer.

The goal is not merely to make one guitar play well.

The goal is to develop a repeatable process that lets you produce professional results again and again.

Guitar Repair Skills Are Only Half the Job

Being able to repair guitars doesn’t automatically mean you’ll succeed as a professional guitar tech.

You also need to know how to deal with customers.

What should you check when a guitar is brought in?

How do you determine what the customer actually wants?

How do you explain additional work that may be needed?

How should services be priced?

How do you avoid taking responsibility for an existing problem that wasn’t documented when the guitar came in?

And perhaps most importantly:

How do you build the kind of reputation that makes musicians call you first when their guitar needs help?

Guitar Tech Academy teaches both sides of the profession.

You’ll learn the technical skills and the business skills.

Become the Guitar Tech Musicians Trust

The goal isn’t simply to finish a course and know a collection of repair procedures.

It’s to reach the point where a player can put a guitar on your counter and say:

“Two other shops couldn’t get this to play right. Can you help?”

And you can confidently answer:

Absolutely.

That’s the level of confidence you’ll gain at Guitar Tech Academy.
